“His insightful understanding and grasp of traditional music culture enables him to render different music styles accurately, bringing out the essence of each piece of music through the orchestra.” -- People’s Music on Conductor Tay Teow Kiat.
City Chinese Orchestra (CCO) is proud to take its audience on a melodious journey through an ensemble of moving folk songs from the famous musical Xiao Er Hei’s Marriage《小二黑结婚》.
Set in the early 1940s, deep in the remote villages of Shaanxi, Xiao Er Hei’s Marriage 《小二黑结婚》tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers who embark on a journey of overcoming the age-old tradition of arranged marriage during a feudal era. In the course of doing so, true human nature is revealed – the beauty of kindness in troubled times, as well as the underlying torrent of greed and selfishness.
Inspired by a true story, the moving tale comes from a famous novel published in 1943 by noted novelist Zhao Shuli. The novel was adapted into a musical and first staged in 1953 with the same title. It has remained highly popular in China to date and was more recently staged at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing in 2010 as a big treat for the opera’s fans.
Under the baton of Music Director Dr Tay Teow Kiat, CCO, together with guest singers from China, is the first orchestra in Singapore to present Xiao Er Hei’s Marriage 《小二黑结婚》in the form of a concert. The Orchestra has presented an impressive number of well-received performances to a wide and enthusiastic crowd both locally and overseas.
