Banishing Hair Scares

Having a nightmare with your hair?

How many of you are guilty of spending hours in the morning bemoaning your hairstyle? Well, you can now turn hair nightmares into dream tresses with these handy tips from renowned hair guru, Kim Robinson.

1. What are some ways to care for damaged hair such as spilt ends, dried and frizzy texture, what are some products you would recommend?

As with many things in life, the best treatment is prevention. At kimrobinson, all the stylists advocate a healthy approach. Everything from the food you eat to how you manage stress makes a difference to the health of your hair.

If you do have damaged hair, I recommend that you make an appointment with a stylist. Before your stylists even thinks of picking up a pair of scissors, make sure to have a discussion about the current health of your hair. Ask him or her what you need to know, the best style to suit your look and lifestyle which can be achieved with your current hair condition, and make sure the stylist is aware of any issues you’re experiencing, such as breakages, split ends, or dry frizz. From there, your stylist should be able to give you a cut that works for you and your hair.

For some quick and easy at-home solutions, I would recommend that you take inventory of the products and styling tools that you use. Make sure to buy the best quality you can afford from brushes to dryers to shampoo.

At kimrobinson, we have a hair brush line crafted from all-natural boar bristles which do not damage your scalp or break your hair. Another one of my favourite solutions to help revitalize hair is a high-quality conditioner or mask (such as HRF Vitamin Plus Conditioning Treatment). Leave the product in, cover your hair with a shower cap and then use your hairdryer to heat the mask for 10 minutes. Unwrap, rinse and watch your newly nourished hair come back to life.

2. For someone who perms her hair on a regular basis, do you suggest they take a break in between just so their hair can rest and recover?

First of all, perms should not be damaging or drying your hair! Curling technology has come such a long way since what we refer to in the studio as “your mother’s perm”.  Today, bespoke, customizable curls which, rather than dry hair actually add condition, are one of the most exciting new hair innovations.

A couple of years ago, we introduced the DIJO Wave exclusively at kimrobinson, which is an amazing technology from Japan. First a pH-balanced solution is applied (and promise, it doesn’t smell!) and then customizable rods are placed in the hair. The rods are then heated for different lengths of time, depending on the curliness of the look. The combination of the solution and the heated rods create curls that “remember” their setting day after day.

If your hair is breaking or was damaged due to a perm, then stop getting that perm. Regularly apply a mask and try to rehydrate your hair, before looking for an alternative, gentler solution to have both curls and healthy hair.

3. For skin, there is sunblock – for hair what is there that can be used to protect it from fraying and getting damaged?

HRF Vitamin Plus Conditioning Treatment is great for this!  Just comb it through and leave it in when you’re in the sun.  But remember to reapply when you’ve had a dip in the pool or the sea.

Also remember to thoroughly wash out sea or pool water as soon as you can after a swim.  If you just give it a quick rinse, the chlorine and salt left in can continue to try out your hair.  Give it a good wash with shampoo and remember to leave conditioner in afterwards.

Don’t forget though, it’s important to protect your head from strong direct sunlight – not just your hair!
